Navid Kermani was born on November 27, 1967 in Siegen, Germany.

After completing school , he studied Islamic Studies, Philosophy, and Theater in Cologne, Cairo, and Bonn. He completed his studies in Summer Semester 1998 as a Dr. Phil. at the Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelms Universität Bonn with a dissertation on the aesthetic reception of the Koran. In 2005 he received his post-doctoral degree ("Habilitation").

From 2000 to 2003 he was a Long-Term Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin / Institute for Advanced Study. Since then he has lived as a writer in Cologne.

Besides writing books he regurarly publishes articles and literary reviews in the German media, esp. the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Die Zeit, and the Neue Zürcher Zeitung.

From 2005 to 2007 he worked as a director and "curator for extraordinary events" at the city theatre of Cologne (Schauspiel Köln). Together with Guy Helminger he hosts the "Literary Salon" at the Stadtgarten Cologne since 2006.

He is a member of the "German Academy for Language and Poetry" and the "German Islam Conference".

Since 2009 Navid Kermani he has been a Senior Fellow at the “Kulturwissenschaftliches Kolleg Essen” (Institute for Advanced Study)

He was awarded several prices, the latest being the Cultural Price of the federal state of Hessen in 2009.

He is an Iranian and a German citizen.
